Net Neutrality Warning

What is Net Neutrality, And Why is it Important?

With all of the recent news on net neutrality, not all of us even know what it is. What is net neutrality and why is it important to protect it? Why do we need it? Why is it being brought up now, and not earlier? I will be covering all of that in this article.

Table of contents:

  1. What is Net Neutrality?
  2. Why is Net Neutrality Important?
  3. Why is Net Neutrality Relevant Now?

What is Net Neutrality

Net neutrality, also known as “open internet” is basically like freedom of speech on the internet. It is the basic principle of communicating without being monitored or censored by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). So without open internet, your ISP can monitor you, censor you, and even block you from accessing any websites that your ISP does not approve of. So for example, if you are a gun collector and your ISP doesn’t like guns, they can block access to any gun websites.

Net neutrality allows free communication between ISPs and the content that they provide. In other words, just think of it as the freedom of speech on the internet.

Why is Net Neutrality Important?

Well unless you really don’t like having freedom of speech on the internet, I guess it doesn’t matter to you. To the rest of us who live and breathe technology, this is a huge deal. Without it, as stated before: our ISPs can monitor you, censor you, and even block you from accessing any websites that your ISP does not approve of. This means that if your ISP does not like a certain type of content, they have the ability to completely block access to that content.

This same rule also applies to phone companies as well. This would mean that the phone company decides whether or not you can call someone. This also means that if you say anything on the phone that your phone company doesn’t approve of, they can block access as well. Not to mention that your ISP and phone company can block access to anything related to their competitors as well. Your internet and phone service freedom would basically be stripped down to very little at this point.

Why is Net Neutrality Relevant Now?

If you are one of the people that never knew what net neutrality was until you saw all of the news articles, you are not alone. It was never a big issue up until recently when the FCC decided to demand regulations to be set for it. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is currently preparing to eliminate net neutrality rules. This is a big issue for the United States and the internet in general. So due to these recent debates from the FCC, net neutrality has become relevant topic for technology enthusiasts and internet users as a whole.

Without a doubt, now is the time to act. So if you are a regular internet user, or phone user, you will be affected by this. If you work in an industry built on technology, or anything to do with internet services, you may even lose your job. Without having open internet, business sales will drop massively as users cannot purchase items online freely. This will cause a massive collapse for a lot of large internet businesses. Stocks will plummet as well as investors lose interest in internet companies.

So yeah, net neutrality is pretty important. If you are interested in protecting your rights, please do us all a favor and sign a petition to keep net neutrality alive!
